"...Another problem is giardia lamblia. A parasite found in
contaminated water. The main treatment we used in the past for giardia
was quinacrine, which is no longer available in the USA. The
antimicrobial drug metronidazole works well in most cases but not all.
There are resistant cases where we don't have a drug to treat them."

What is Giardia Lamblia?
The protozoa "giardia lamblia", is a single-celled parasite. It can exist as a trophozoite, or as an ovoid cyst. The giardia lamblia protozoan are unicellular and colorless organisms that lack a cell wall.
Giardiasis, which is the disease caused by giardia lamblia, is most frequently associated with the consumption of contaminated water.
Relative giardia lamblia frequency
Disease caused by giardia lamblia is more prevalent in children than in adults, possibly because many individuals seem to have a lasting immunity after infection.
About 40% of those who are diagnosed with giardia lamblia (giardiasis), demonstrate disaccharide intolerance up to 6 months after the giardia lamblia infection can no longer be detected. In some immune deficient individuals, diseases caused by giardia lamblia may contribute to the life span shortening.
